IMB-003 Binder (One-pack binder for IMD/FIM)

IMB-003 is a screen-printable one-pack binder for adhesion between injection molding resins such as ABS or acrylic and a pattern-printed sheet. An environment and human friendly screen ink that is free of benzene, toluene, xylene, and isophorone.

Applications & Substrate

♦ Binder layer between pattern-printed PC sheet or treated PET film and injection resins such as PC (polycarbonate), ABS, PC/ABS, AS or PMMA.

Special Features

♦ Excellent adhesion between pattern-printed sheet and injection molding resins such as ABS or PMMA resin.
♦ Environment and human friendly screen ink that is free of benzene, toluene, xylene, and isophorone
♦ Allows pattern printing only on specific parts of an object
♦ Good workability as it is One-pack

Thinning, Cleaning

♦ Stir well before every use.
♦ Thinning is not required for standard use. However F-002 (Standard), F-003 (Slow dry) thinners can be used with 10% dilution if necessary.
♦ Avoid excessive thinning and avoid using other solvents as this may cause lack of adhesion and blocking.
Screen Cleaner N is recommended to clean the stencil.

Printing

♦ T-200 - T-250 mesh is recommended.

Drying

Heated drying is required as residual solvent causes lack of adhesion with injection molding resin.
♦ Tack-free time is approximately 5 minutes at room temperature (25°C) or 2 minutes at 80°C.
♦ Final drying should be done according to pattern printing ink's specifications.
♦ Drying speed changes according to drying conditions such as room temperature, humidity, dryer type, printed area, mesh of stencil, substrate, etc. Preliminary testing under actual conditions is strongly recommended before commercial run.

Pattern Printing

♦ Ink for pattern printing should be selected according to substrate. IPX or INQ ink series are recommended for polycarbonate (PC) sheet and treated polyester (PET) film.

Adhesion Test for IMD/FIM

♦ Pattern printing conditions
Substrate: Polycarbonate sheet (0.5 mm thick).
Ink: IPX-971 Black Ink, diluted with F -003 Solvent at 10 % and mixed with 240 Catalyst at 10%.
Stencil: T-250 mesh. Drying: 5min. at 80°C.
♦ Binder printing conditions
Binders: IMB-009 and IMB-003, without thinning. Stencil: T-250 mesh.
Drying: 60 min. at 80°C (Box dryer).
♦ Injection molding conditions
Place the printed film in the mold and inject ABS resin onto the Binder from printed side
♦ Injection Conditions
Molding pressure: 60 tons; Mold temperature: 60°C
Injected resin: ABS (Techno-polymer Co. 21)
Temperature of melt: 250°C. Injection speed: 60 mm/sec
Dimension of injected parts: 60 x 80 x 2 (mm).
♦ Inspection Conditions
Cut out 10mm width strip from the pattern printed film, and pull it from polycarbonate body on Tensilon at 300 mm/min speed and measure 180-degree peel strength (kgf/cm).

Results of the Injected Resin Adhesion

Tested ink Tested Binder 180 degree Peel strength
IPX-971 Black IMB-009 1.6 - 2.8 kgf/cm
IPX-971 Black IMB-003 5.9 - 6.5 kgf/cm

Note: Above-mentioned results are for lab purposes only, cannot be guaranteed.

Caution

Adhesion to injection molding resin varies according to types and grades of resin. In the Film Insert Molding process (in which injected resin is integrated with the substrate), the finished product may be affected by any of the following: the type of substrate, the ink used in pattern printing, the printing conditions, the printing order, the drying method, the forming resin, the mold (type, position of the mold and shape, number of gates), the injection conditions, etc. Preliminary testing under actual conditions is strongly recommended before a commercial run.
Binder cannot be used by mixing with screen ink.

Safety and Handling

Flammable; UN Class: 3.3 UN Number: 1210
Use safety gloves and eyeglasses to protect skin and eyes. If the ink or coating comes in contact with skin, wash with soap and plenty of water. If ink comes in contact with eyes, wash with plenty of water and consult with a doctor. Containers should be closed tightly after use and stored in a cool, dark place. MSDS is available upon request. Please request a copy and read it carefully before handling materials. Follow instructions and use all ink products responsibly.
