Term Definitions:

The abbreviations WEEE and RoHS respectively stand for “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive” and “Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment.”

In simple terms, WEEE is a “Directive related to the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment wastes that contain any of the 6 named substances which are deemed hazardous to the environment and human beings”, while RoHS is “The prohibition of the use of these 6 substances in equipment manufactured in the future.” The 6 substances are Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Hexavalent chromium, Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). The first 4 substances are the same as automotive-related ELV directive substances.
These “directives” are EU directives and products distributed in the EU are subject to them. Thus these directives affect many companies manufacturing products for EU countries. Even if your products are not exported to EU zone directly, but other products containing your products as components are exported to the EU, compensation can still be demanded from you when the non-compliant components are traced back to their origin.
